Our Veterinarians

Dr. John Howe

I graduated from the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1977. After graduation, I started a solo mixed animal practice in North Branch, Minnesota. Then in 1984, the practice was sold and my wife, children and I moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Initially, I began another solo practice, North Country Veterinary Clinic, but by concentrating on client service and high quality veterinary medicine, the practice grew to include four doctors and a highly qualified staff. I enjoy all aspects of veterinary medicine—orthopedics, surgery, dentistry and wellness—and all animals—dogs, cats, equine, exotics, birds, reptiles and even fish. It is my desire to provide exceptional veterinary care and a personalized touch for all your animals. I am fortunate to be able to live in the beautiful Grand Rapids area and be able to work in a profession I love. I serve on the Board of Directors of the American Veterinary Medical Association representing six states and also serve on several AVMA Councils. I was honored to receive the Minnesota Veterinarian of the Year award in 2011. I am a member of the AVMA, Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Equine Practitioners, the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Fish Veterinarians. My wife, Diane, and I have three children, five grandchildren and a special English bulldog. Although we do not currently have any horses, we enjoyed raising and showing Appaloosas. Living in this sportsman’s paradise, I enjoy fishing and hunting. My other hobbies include scuba diving, snowmobiling, and photography.

Dr. Candace Smette

A North Dakota native, I graduated from North Dakota State University in 1995 with a B.S. in Veterinary Technology. After 4 years in the veterinary field in North Dakota as a Licensed Veterinary Technologist, I decided it was time to pursue my full dream and went back to school. I graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004 and then joined the North Country Veterinary Clinic team. My husband, Derek, and I enjoy going to his 2 teenagers' activities and doing outdoor activities together. We both enjoy horseback riding and camping, ATV riding, fishing and snowmobiling. We have 4 horses, a German Shepherd Dog and a cat that round out our family.

Dr. Terry Pettey

Dr. Terry Pettey is a 1995 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota. He has an interest in internal medicine, dentistry and orthopedics. He is a member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners, a member of the American Veterinary Dental Society, a member of both the Minnesota and American Veterinary Medical Associations. Dr. Pettey likes to approach the care of your pet as a team effort between you and him. Each day his goal is to find a solution that best fits the needs of the client and the pet. He realizes this is different for each patient. When he is not working, there is a good chance that you will find him spending time outdoors with his son, wife and two rescued pets.

Dr. Ryan Dutton

Dr. Dutton joined our practice in June as part of our large animal expansion. He grew up in St. Michael, MN before heading off to college in North Dakota and vet school at Iowa State University. He has a particular interest in beef cattle but enjoys working with all species. During his free time Dr. Dutton enjoys playing volleyball and softball, spending time at the lake, and hunting with his Springer Spaniel “Trio”. He has been a great addition to our team and the community.

Dr. Margo Gleason

Originally from Hamel Minnesota, I grew up with a love of animals, and had a variety of pets including small exotics, dogs, cats, and horses. I attended University of Minnesota for my undergraduate program and Ross University on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts for veterinary school. My focus as a veterinarian is to give the best care to the patient and build a compassionate relationship with the owners to help them through some of the more difficult moments when their pets are ill. During my free time I enjoy staying active and being outdoors, running, skiing, and hiking. I have a large freshwater aquarium of Blood Parrot and Severum cichlid fish and a Border Collie mix named Chevy.

Dr. Briana Selleck

I grew up in Stillwater, MN, and discovered my love of the agriculture industry through my involvement in FFA. I attended the University of Wisconsin - River Falls and later transferred to Berry College (Rome, GA) where I completed my degree in Animal Science. While in vet school at the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign, I became, and remain, active in Christian Veterinary Missions, which allowed me to combine my loves of travel and animals. I enjoy working with cattle, small ruminants, horses, dogs, and cats, and helping their owners make the best decisions for their health. My husband, Matt, and I share our home with 2 dogs (Sallie and Penny), 2 cats (Brooks and Beckett), and a turtle (Tilly). In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, kayaking, fishing and gardening.
